Barn On Baseline/Dekalb Animal Shelter

Image
How do you help the animals in a shelter if the Director won't let you?  How do the animals get the help they need when nobody cares?  Well we all care and are willing to do anything to improve the conditions at the shelter. This is Bert who was adopted by Drew & Katy:     Bert weighed only 3 pounds when Drew and Katy adopted him in June 2018. He sat at Barn On Baseline dying in his cage. Bert is now on the way to recovery.  According to many volunteers I've spoken with, this is not an isolated incident.    I was there on a 90 degree day in August for two hours.  The dogs were in the outside kennels barking the entire time with no water given to them. Nobody came to calm them down. In September I went in to see if there were disclosures on the cages as required by state law. There was nothing. Roberta the shelter Director told me she didn't need to disclose because the Illinois Department Of Agriculture said this was perfectly fine.

Pope's Little Angels

CAPS Kansas Director investigated Pope's Little Angels in Haysville Kansas: 08/03/18 Gary Pope advertises his long hair dachshund puppies on puppyfind.com.   I made an appointment to visit him to see a puppy on 8/3/18 @ 1p. When I knocked on the door, several puppies/dogs were barking.   He met me at the front door and asked me to go around back to a large fenced in yard.   The 4 puppies were in good health, fur in good condition with no visible parasites.   Gary handed me one of the puppies to hold.   The rest of the puppies were very shy, didn’t approach me and went to the other side of the yard (in a shady area).   I asked to see the puppy’s parents and Gary went inside his home and brought out the male.   Then he went inside a small building and brought out the female.   Both dogs appeared clean and healthy.   However, I was not allowed to pet either of the parents.   Gary held both of the parents when brought out, he didn’t let them walk i

Kerry's Puppy Barn

CAPS Kansas Director investigated Kerry's Puppy Barn in Wichita Kansas:   8/1/18   Kerry advertises her puppies on puppyfind.com.  The 2 shih Tzu puppies she had for sale were $550 cash only (14 weeks old).  I phoned Kerry and made arrangements to see her puppies on 8/1/18. When I talked to Kerry, she was on her way to her vet in Crawford County, KS (4 counties away).   I asked her why she was using a vet so far away and she indicated the vet was also a breeder.    Her KS state forms indicate her vet is Laura Moreland of Girard, KS.   Laura is the vet on the gov’s pet advisory committee.   I questioned her about any shih tzu specific health issues and she didn’t tell me about allergies that these dogs are prone to have.    Kerry said that she also bred poodles and shih tzu poodle mixes.   I told her that I was a novice dog owner and she said I should visit Petland to see the different kind of puppies (to help me decide upon a breed).   When I arrived at Ke
